hibernian pub

For this week’s post I decided to feature a restaurant that is a little bit different than the places I usually visit. Yet another DTR eat located on Glenwood Ave, this week we visited Hibernian Irish Pub. Hibernian is a lot different than most of the restaurants in DTR. Not only do they feature mostly Irish dishes but they also are located in a two story building with a sort of gothic architect style.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Like I mentioned earlier, Hibernian is an Irish Pub so naturally, most of their dishes are Irish. Some of their most popular dinner dishes are the Fish and Chips, the Reuben, the Shepherd’s Pie, the Pub Burger, and the Corned Beef and Cabbage. They also have really awesome appetizers including the Spinach and Artichoke Dip, the Silver Dollar Mushrooms, the Chicken Quesadillas and the Bacon Cheddar Pub Chips. Along with all of these great food items they also have over twenty different kinds of beer on tap including a couple from local breweries.

Besides the food, my absolute favorite thing about Hibernian is the Tuesday night Bingo. I absolutely love playing bingo and Hibernian hosts it every Tuesday from 8-10 and it is free to play. They give away tons of different prizes like t-shirts, cups, hats, appetizers, drinks and even gift cards. If you’re looking for something fun to spice up your week, I would definitely recommend visiting Hibernian every Tuesday to enjoy a couple of hours of Bingo.

what I ordered:

I normally don’t order an entire meal when I visit Hibernian mostly because I usually only go on Tuesday and I end up ordering an appetizer or two. But this week I wanted to enjoy an entire meal and be able to share my experience with you all. After much deliberation I decided to order the Shepherd’s Pie and it was absolutely amazing! It is one of the most popular dishes at Hibernian and has beef, lamb and veggies inside of it and is topped with an enormous layer of garlic mashed potatoes. It is honestly one of the best Shepherd’s Pie that I have ever had in my life.

On a night when I normally just get an appetizer, I always order the Spinach and Artichoke dip which is also really good. It normally comes in the Dipping Trio (also includes hummus and pimento cheese) but I just order the spinach and artichoke with a side of pita slices. Not saying that the other dips aren’t great, but the spinach and artichoke is definitely the best.

For good food and fun, Hibernian is the place to be. For more information about the restaurant be sure to visit their website http://www.hibernianpub.com!

carolina ale house

Processed with VSCOcam with p5 preset

It’s been a while since I visited a new restaurant, I decided to try somewhere that I’ve heard a lot of people have been recently talking about. Carolina Ale House, which just recently relocated to the Downtown Raleigh area, is on the corner of Glenwood Ave and Tucker Street and is a sports themed restaurant and bar. This restaurant is a little different from the places I normally visit because unlike the others, it is a chain restaurant. But Carolina Ale House originated right here in Raleigh, so it’s basically a local restaurant. Along with the DTR location they have twenty five other locations throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Texas and Tennessee. This was my first visit to the new location and I was so amazed by the layout of the restaurant. It is located in a three story building with the third story being the primary place to dine. They have very open seating and on a nice day you can beat sitting by an open window.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

The Carolina Ale House has a variety of different things on their menu including sandwiches, burgers, soups, salads, pizza, and chicken wings. They also have over a hundred different types of beer and run specials every single week. Some of the most popular items on the menu are the Buffalo Zinger Wrap, Caribbean Fish Tacos, the Pub Burger, Beer-Battered Fish and Chips, and the Southern Fried Chicken Salad. On Wednesday’s they have $3 pints and on Thursdays they have karaoke from 10 pm until close along with live music on Saturday nights.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

what I ordered:

It was very hard to choose between at the great items on the menu, but I ultimately chose the veggie pizza. Consisting of spinach, mushroom, red onions, red peppers, tomatoes and mozzarella, the veggie pizza is not only an idea for vegetarians but also a great choice for any pizza lover. I wasn’t expecting a large pizza, but the size was a lot bigger than I expected. It had six slices and was enough for a meal and leftovers.

Also before the food came, I couldn’t help but order the “Frickles,” also known as fried pickles. I’m a huge pickle lover so it wasn’t hard for me to decide to order these at all. They come with a creamy horseradish sauce, but I don’t typically eat horseradish sauce so I substituted ranch instead, which I would definitely recommend. The portion wasn’t too small either, one order was enough for two people. They have a lot of great appetizer choices so I would totally recommend ordering one.

If you haven’t visited the new Carolina Ale House location, you need to head downtown and give it a try. With an awesome view, you guaranteed to have a great dining experience. They have plenty of food and drink choices so you can always try something new. For more information about Carolina Ale House you can visit their website at carolinaalehouse.com!

Be sure to check back every week to see where I go next!

top five

Here are my top five favorite burger/hotdog joints in DTR. Enjoy!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

1. Char-Grill:
On of my favorite things about Raleigh and an absolute classic to the town would definitely be Char-Grill. There are multiple Char-Grill’s located throughout the Raleigh area but the one closest to the Downtown Raleigh area is the original Char-Grill located on Hillsborough Street. If you’re looking for a fresh burger or hot dog on-the-go, Char-Grill is the place to go. You can either order and sit down to enjoy your meal or you can grab it and go.

2. Snoopy’s Hot Dogs: If you like hotdogs, then you have to love Snoopy’s. Also a classic to the Raleigh area, you can find a Snoopy’s at a few different locations around town. A lot like Char-Grill, Snoopy’s is a walk-up hotdog restaurant that has fast service and good food. They have things other than hotdogs including burgers and chicken sandwiches, but are most famous for their dogs. They also have a Hillsborough Street location so it can sometimes be a dilemma between Snoopy’s and Char-Grill.

3. Bad Daddy’s:
One of my favorite restaurants in Seaboard Station would definitely have to be Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar. They have a lot of different speciality burgers but my favorite thing to order is the build-your-own burger. On my burger I always get american cheese, onion straws, and Bad Daddy’s sauce with a side of either homemade chips or sweet potato fries. Their prices aren’t too bad for the size of the burgers and the amount of food that you get.

4. Mojoe’s: Another great burger joint in the DTR area is Mojoe’s. You can find this restaurant right on the corner of Peace Street and Glenwood Avenue and I guarantee that you will not miss it. Similar to Bad Daddy’s, Mojoe’s specializes in burgers and also offers sit-down service. My favorite burger to order from Mojoe’s is the “BBQ Burger” which has bacon, cheddar cheese, onions, and bbq sauce on it. They mostly sell burgers but they also have a few sandwiches and appetizers to choose from. Also every night after 10 pm, you can get burgers for $3!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

5. The Station: Even though The Station is necessarily a burger place, they still feature one of my most favorite burgers in town. The burger that they offer is called the “Station Burger” and has two patties, cheese, as well lettuce, tomato and onion. Compared to a lot of the other burgers that I have talked about in this post, this burger seems kind of plain. And it is, but that is the best part about it. FYI: Monday’s are the best time to go because you can get this huge burger for only $5. (I have previously posted about The Station so check it out for more information: https://eatdtr.wordpress.com/2015/09/18/the-station/)

Be sure to come visit next week when I should be back on track visiting somewhere new! But for now, go enjoy a burger at one of these great places!

state fair

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

For the past week or so the North Carolina State Fair has been in town. The NC State Fair is held every year in October right here in Raleigh, NC at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. If you have ever been then you know about all the outrageous food they have and even if you haven’t been, I’m sure you have at least heard about it. This year the fair runs from October 15th until the 25th, so if you haven’t been yet there is still time. And if you don’t know what the NC State Fair is here’s a quick explanation: animals and agriculture, food, rides, food, games, and more food.

Since the fair is in town, I figured it was only right to blog about my favorite fair foods. So here it goes:

  • ribbon fries: My absolute favorite fair food has definitely got to be ribbon fries. I love homemade chips anytime of the year so when the fair comes around the first thing I go for are the ribbon fries.
  • lemonade: Okay, technically not food, but who doesn’t love fresh lemonade? The perfect drink to go with any type of fair food has got to be lemonade. You can find lemonade at just about every food vendor at the fair.
  • fried macaroni and cheese: If you like macaroni and cheese and fried food I would definitely suggest finding the one of the many vendors that sell fried macaroni and cheese. It’s the perfect combination of mac and cheese and fried-ness.
  • fried oreos: If you go to the fair and don’t get some type of fried dessert, you actually didn’t go. My favorite fried dessert would have to be the fried Oreo’s. They are absolutely amazing and I would totally recommend these over and over again. You can also find these at just about every fried food vendor.fried oreos
  • roasted corn: This is also a fair must have. If you’re looking to take a break from all of the crazy fried foods you should turn around and look for the corn. This is also one of those food items that you can find at just about every corner.
  • corn dogs: Even though corn dogs aren’t a super popular fair food, they’re still pretty awesome. Most of the time the dog is battered and fried right in front of you so most of the time they are fresh and made to order.
  • cotton candy: Can you really leave the fair and not get cotton candy? Every time you turn around there is a vendor selling cotton candy so you won’t have to look far for this delicious fair treat either.

  • funnel cake: I don’t normally order funnel cakes at the fair just because they are so messy but they are still a fair favorite. Along with cotton candy and candy apples, funnel cakes are one of the more popular items you can find at the fair.
  • turkey legs: This is also something that I wouldn’t normally order, mostly because I’m just not that big on turkey, but I felt that it was necessary to add to the list.
  • blooming onion: Even though they can be a little messy and hard to carry around, blooming onions are another good option. If you can find time to sit down and enjoy something to eat I would totally recommend ordering a blooming onion to share among friends.

If you haven’t had the chance to try any of these awesome foods you still until Sunday to head over to the fairgrounds. The fair opens at 8 am and will be open until midnight on Friday and Saturday and 11 pm on Sunday night. You don’t want to miss out on all the excitement!

For more info about vendors, ticket sales, admission and other information about the North Carolina State Fair be sure to visit their website at ncstatefair.org. (Hint: If you buy your tickets online you can not only save time in lines, but save $1 on admission price!)

armadillo grill

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

This week I decided it was time to adventure out a little bit. Instead of visiting a typical sit-down-for-dinner restaurant, I chose to go somewhere fun, quick and easy! What better place than Armadillo Grill? Dillo (for short) is located right on Glenwood Ave in the heart of Downtown Raleigh. A lot like Dos Taquitos XOCO, where I visited a few weeks back, Dillo is an authentic Tex-Mex restaurant that never gets old. They have both indoor and outdoor seating but I would totally recommend sitting outside if the weather is just right.

Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset

Armadillo Grill has a pretty basic menu. They have tacos, tacos, and well, more tacos. Along with tacos they also have burritos, enchiladas, chalupas, nachos, wings and salads.  They also have some of the best queso and chips around and the guacamole isn’t all that bad either. All of their items are build-your-own so you can make your meal just how you like it.

One thing that is unique about Dillo is that instead of walking in and sitting down to order or walking up to a counter to place your order, you instead walk in and fill out an order pad. First you write your name at the top and mark wether it’s “for here” or “to go.” Then you choose what you would like to order. When ordering tacos you can choose between chicken, steak, chili, guac, or beans and cheese taco and then you can customize it by adding whatever kind of toppings you’d like. If your not in the mood for tacos you can simply mark down one of the other options. They don’t have a ton of options but I guarantee you they have something on their menu that you would enjoy!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

what I ordered:

I will go ahead and say that Dillo is one of my all time favorite Raleigh restaurants and I probably go a lot more than I should. So ordering isn’t complicated for me at all. I normally get the chicken taco dillo deal which is a pretty awesome deal if you ask me. For like $7.95 you get one chicken taco with queso and chips and a drink. Queso can get pricey depending on where you go, so getting a taco, chips, a drink and queso for under ten bucks is pretty freaking awesome for me. Usually one taco fills me up, but if you’re feeling a little bit more hungry I would definitely recommend adding a second taco for like two or three bucks more.

Another great thing about Armadillo grill is that they partner with the mobile app Stealz to save people like you and me money every time you visit the location. After downloading the app you can receive points for checking in and sharing pictures and updates to different social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. After you receive so many points you get awesome rewards like free chips and queso (5 points), one free taco (10 points), one free burrito (15 points), free nachos (15 points), or a free t-shirt (30 points). If you haven’t already I would definitely recommend downloading Stealz because they are partnered with not just Armadillo Grill but a lot of other restaurants throughout the Raleigh area!

For more information about Armadillo Grill you can visit their website at http://www.armadillogrill.com! Be sure to check back next week and see where we visit next!

the pit

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

The next stop on our adventure is at a little hidden place on W. Davie street in Downtown Raleigh called The Pit. There aren’t too many barbecue places around Raleigh but this one is a must visit. The Pit is an authentic barbecue joint in the warehouse district of DTR that cooks whole-hog, pit-cooked barbecue. This restaurant is very unique to its location because you wouldn’t typically find a barbecue place in this part of town. But the southern vibe and downtown location make the perfect location for The Pit.

Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset

For anyone who loves any kind of southern food, you can most definitely find what you’re craving somewhere on The Pit’s menu. They have just about anything you could possibly want. Some of their most popular items are of course the Chopped BBQ, Pulled Pork, and the Southern Fried Chicken. They of course have lots of other options such as Baby Back Ribs, Carolina Style Ribs, Chopped BBQ Turkey, BBQ Chicken, and Beef Brisket. All of these meals are served as “plate” with two sides, and let me tell you, it is not easy choosing only two. The side options include green beans, BBQ baked beans, macaroni and cheese, black-eyed peas, fries, sweet potato fries, potato salad, brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes, fried okra, brunswick stew, cole slaw and collards. Along with your meal they also bring out homemade biscuits and hushpuppies with homemade butter.

Like most other restaurants in the Downtown Raleigh area, they also have a very unique and broad drink menu. They have different specials on wine, cocktails and beer and also feature some local brews. I went with a sweet tea though, which was pretty good in my opinion.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

what I ordered:

Being from a small town like Wilson, NC (where barbecue is practically famous, shoutout to Parker’s Barbecue) it wasn’t hard for me to make a decision about what I wanted. I know how I like my barbecue and I know what I want with it. So after little deliberation I decided to order the Chopped BBQ plate with a side of fried okra and macaroni and cheese. The barbecue was awesome and the two side were equally as good. The macaroni and cheese is to die for, so if your a fan of mac and cheese, I definitely recommend it!

The Pit is a bit more pricey than your average barbecue joint. But for the quality of food, the presentation, and the atmosphere of the restaurant, it is definitely worth it. The service was also really good and the staff were very friendly. Even on a busy Monday evening I still got in and out within an hour and half time frame. I really enjoyed eating at The Pit because there aren’t many places around Raleigh like this one to eat. It reminds me of the type of restaurants I go to when I’m home and it’s nice to have found somewhere that is similar.

If you ever in the neighborhood looking for some good southern food, be sure to head on over to The Pit. For more information about the restaurant, their menu, and their specials, be sure to visit their website at http://www.thepit-raleigh.com!

dos taquitos xoco

null

Well, it’s Thursday again so that means we have a new downtown Raleigh restaurant for you. This week we stopped by a sweet (or maybe not so sweet) little place called Dos Taquitos XOCO located in the heart of downtown Raleigh, right on Glenwood Avenue. As you maybe be able to tell from the name, Dos Taquitos is a Mexican/Tex-Mex style restaurant that has a very funky but vibrant vibe. When you walk in the doors you become immediately overwhelmed by all the decorations covering the walls as well as hanging down from the ceiling. They have indoor and outside seating as well as bar seating. If you catch them on the right day when the weather is nice, I would definitely recommend sitting outside.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

This was my first time ever going to Dos Taquitos (and I love Mexican food) so I was really excited to go and see what they had on the menu. I went around lunchtime so they had a lunch special menu which had a lot of great choices. Just about everything on the lunch menu was under ten bucks, which is freaking awesome. They had everything from fajitas, to tacos, as well as quesadillas and soup. Along with the lunch menu they also have a full menu available any time of the day with lots of different choices. After talking with one of the waiters about their menu she told me some of their most popular items on the menu were the Enchiladas de Puebla (three enchiladas each with different fillings and sauce), Steak Tacos, Tacos de Mariscos (tacos with either tilapia or shrimp), and the chicken quesadilla. If you’re a taco fanatic I would also recommend joining Dos Taquitos on Thursdays for their karaoke night where they have a $10 taco buffet. That’s right, all the tacos you want for just ten bucks.

Along with an awesome lunch/dinner menu, Dos Taquitos also has a great drink menu. They run specials just about everyday on margaritas, draft beer, and other mixed drinks. If you’re of age take advantage of these awesome deals and enjoy some hearty Mexican food while you’re at it.

what I ordered:

Since I was trying a new restaurant for the first time, I wanted to order something I wouldn’t traditionally order at a Mexican restaurant. After much deliberation, I decided to take advantage of the lunch specials and order the “Fagrillitas.” I don’t normally order any kind of fajitas because I’m not a huge fan of spicy things, but these fajitas were awesome. My plate came as a skillet filled with peppers, onions, squash, and tomatoes along with flour tortillas and a bowl of toppings including sour cream, guacamole, lettuce and pico de gallo. As you can see from the picture, they vegetables came out still cooking and I absolutely couldn’t wait to build my fajitas. I was a little nervous to try them at first but after taking the first bite I was sooo happy with my meal. The vegetables had the right amount of seasoning, not too hot but just right, and with the toppings, the fajitas were perfect.

Another thing that is absolutely to die for is the Queso (cheese dip) and Guacamole. I went with one of my friends during lunch and decided to get both dips to share between the two of us. Let me just tell you, they have some of the best queso and guacamole that I have ever had. No lie. I would definitely recommend ordering one of them, if not both.

If you’re interested in a good Mexican food and looking for a cool place to hang out with friends, eat dinner with your family, or have date night with your significant other, I say go to Dos Taquitos. You won’t regret it and your pocket won’t too much either.

Also, if you would like to read more about Dos Taquitos be sure either to visit their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/DosTaquitosXoco) or head on over to “The Triangle Explorer” and see what they have to say! the station

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

For this week’s feature I visited a little corner bar called The Station. You can locate The Station on the corner of Person Street and Pace Street in Raleigh’s Historic Oakwood neighborhood. As some of you Raleigh historians may know, an Amoco gas station stood in the exact same place years and years ago (also where the name The Station comes from). The Station is a very friendly place to visit and is super creative and cozy on the inside and out. It’s mostly an outdoor restaurant but they do have some inside seating as well as fire pits for when it gets a little too cold outside. Whether you’re stopping in for lunch or just grabbing a drink, the Station is the perfect place to visit with an awesome atmosphere. Also, this week’s weather made for a perfect outdoor meal, so why not visit The Station?

Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset

The Station offers a very unique menu. They take super traditional menu items and put creative spins on each one. The  Station has a full menu including starters, soups and salads, sandwiches and kid items as well as a full drink menu. No matter what you traditionally like to eat, I promise you will be able to find something on the menu you will enjoy. Some of the main dishes that The Station offers are the Cuban sandwich, the Bahn Mi, a Smoked Salmon BLT, their famous Station burger (which btw are only FIVE BUCKS on Mondays), a Sloppy Joe, Black Bean burger, and the Brown Butter Beer Grilled Cheese. For sides they offer homemade chips, season wedges (fries), roasted vegetables, and my personal favorite, mac and cheese.

what I ordered:IMG_5584

Having been to the Station multiple times prior to my most recent visit, I have had the opportunity to try different items from the menu. But this time I wanted to try something I had never had before. After talking with my awesome waiter, Chyna (maybe his name was Chad, I’m not really sure), he convinced me to order the Sloppy Joe. I’m not one to traditionally order some so messy, slightly because I’m prone to food stained clothes, but I was really excited  for my meal after it being recommended so highly.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

The sandwich was your typical sloppy joe filling topped with pimento cheese and a few of the homemade chips and I also ordered the chips as my side. I wasn’t particularly excited about the pimento cheese because I don’t normally eat it, but I’m so glad I got it because it made the sandwich a hundred times better. The homemade chips are always amazing and the homemade ranch makes them even better. Another side I would recommend getting is definitely the mac and cheese, it is freaking awesome. I was very pleased with my meal and I would definitely order it again.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention!!!! Make sure you order yourself a glass of sweet tea, because it’s surely some of the best in downtown Raleigh and even comes in a little mason jar.

The Station is a great place to go for a lunch break, on a date, with your family, or even for a drink. It’s laid back atmosphere will make you forget about the craziness beyond in the downtown Raleigh area. So if you’re ever in the area be sure to drop in.

Don’t forget to check back next week to see where my next stop will be!

fiction kitchen

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

This week’s DTR adventure takes us to a very small, but very bright restaurant located in the warehouse district of downtown called The Fiction Kitchen. It sits near the corner of Dawson Street ad W Cabarrus Street and it’s bright green exterior makes it hard to miss. The Fiction Kitchen is a full vegetarian restaurant meaning every single item on their menu is 100% vegetarian friendly. This was my first time visiting a vegetarian restaurant and even though I myself am not a vegetarian I was really excited to try something new. To begin with I was a little nervous about what to order because I wasn’t sure of a lot of the menu items but after discussing all the options with one of the waitresses, I was ready to order my first vegetarian meal.

Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset

I’m no expert on vegetarian foods, but the Fiction Kitchen had a variety of very unique items on their menu. For appetizers they had a couple of different things to choose from such as vegetable root fries (which are amazing), squash and zucchini cakes, lettuce wraps and cornmeal-fried oyster mushrooms. They also have a small selection of soups and salads to go along with their appetizer selection. Some of their entree options include the NC peanut noodle bowl,  a curry bowl, a braised and grilled tempeh sandwich, succotash farro risotto, “chicken” and waffles, eastern NC styled BBQ pulled “pork” and tinga tacos. The waitress that I had was absolutely fantastic and took the time to go over and  explain what each of the meals were.

After telling you all the awesome things that FK has to offer, you’re probably wondering how much of a dent a meal here is going to put in your wallet. Well here it is, it’s not going to hurt at all. The Fiction Kitchen is a totally affordable vegetarian restaurant with all of their meals being fifteen dollars or less. You definitely don’t have to worry about wasting money here, because the value and quantity is totally worth the money you’re paying.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

what I ordered:

My favorite part of each of my blog posts is telling you all what awesome meal I ordered while visiting each restaurant. This week was a little bit different for me though. Like I mentioned earlier, I am not vegetarian so I was completely new to all these meals and especially the substitute meat. After much consideration, I decided to order the crispy fried “chicken” and waffles.

At first I was really skeptical about ordering any kind of substitute meat (I am a true meat lover) but after talking to my waitress I was confident with my choice. The “chicken” part of the meal is of course not actually chicken, it is a mock version made of soy products made pretty locally in Morrisville, NC.

The meal was presented as a belgian waffle with the mock chicken on top, then topped with arugula and agave as well as blueberries. I thought the meal was absolutely fabulous and I would definitely recommend it to any first time visitors at the Fiction Kitchen. The mock chicken was actually pretty good, but it definitely wasn’t the real thing. After visiting FK for the first time, I would most definitely come back again. I had a lot of fun exploring the menu and I cannot wait to try something else the next time I visit.

If you’re ever looking for an awesome vegetarian restaurant, Fiction Kitchen is the place to go. With all that being said, be sure to check back next week to see where I visit next!

sushi blues cafe

FullSizeRender

On this weeks adventure through downtown Raleigh, I visited a little place called Sushi Blues Cafe. Located on Glenwood avenue, Sushi Blues is the perfect place to go when searching for any kind of sushi or Japanese food. They offer outdoor seating as well as indoor seating, but when the weather is right you can’t beat sitting outside. Sushi blues offers a very relaxing atmosphere with a very jazzy/blues feel (hence the name sushi blues).

Sushi Blues has an incredible sushi menu with other fifty different rolls to choose from. They have a lot of simple rolls and also have a lot of complex rolls with tons of different ingredients. Most of the rolls have some sort of seafood so I definitely wouldn’t recommend eating here if you’re deathly allergic to seafood. They have anything from crab and lobster to salmon, tuna and eel. They also have a roll that has chicken for all you chicken lovers out there. And if none of that sounds appealing or you just don’t eat any kind of meat, they have a vegetarian list to choose from. One of my favorite things about this restaurant is that on the “specialty” menu, all of the rolls are named after someone/something famous and well known Raleigh names. Some of these include: the Marilyn Monroe, the Steven Tyler, the Rat Pack, the Carter Finley, the Gottfried, and Jimmy V.

Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset

So they have a variety to choose from and even give their sushi cool names but the absolute best thing about the Sushi Blues menu (and I really don’t think anyone can argue with this) is the buy one get one free deal!!!! Yes I said free. To a college student, that word means everything. Always take advantage of anything and everything that is free, so surely take advantage of this BOGO deal. So basically make sure you come to Sushi Blues on a full stomach and splurge on your favorite roll because guess what? That second roll is free and you will want to eat it all.

Sushi Blues also offers a lot more than sushi though. On the lunch menu they offer items such as teriyaki and tempura meals, stir fry, and even have roll specials that come with soup. The dinner menu is basically a step up from the lunch menu offering most of the same things with just a lot more options. Along with the dinner and lunch menus, Sushi Blues also has a complex drink menu with lots of different options to choose from. They even offer daily specials, so if your of age be sure to take advantage of that. And if at the end of your meal you still haven’t had enough, they even offer dessert items.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

what I ordered:

I will start with saying that I’m not a huge fan of all Japanese food and I totally only come to this place for the sushi and  since there are sooo many choices it was hard for me to narrow it down to just two different rolls. But somehow I managed to finally narrow it down and I decided on the Sweet Home Alabama roll and the Big Count Basie.

The Sweet Home Alabama roll is my absolute favorite thing to order. Inside it has tempura chicken, cucumber, spicy mayo sauce, fresh spring mix and has roe and sesame seeds on top. I love this roll because unlike most types of sushi, it has chicken instead of some kind of seafood. It’s very different and has a very original taste.

The other roll I order, the Big Count Basie, is actually from the vegetarian section. Although I am not a vegetarian, the big count is another one of my favorite rolls. This roll has sweet potato tempura, zucchini tempura, as well as cucumber and sesame seeds on top. I feel like this is also very original because it has sweet potato which isn’t your go to sushi ingredient.

Although these two rolls are what I ordered and happen to be two of my favorites, there are so many more choices and I would totally recommend trying new and off the wall things. One day I even want to step outside my comfort zone and order something other than sushi (maybe, lol).

As this post comes to an end I just want to say thank you for reading my blog and be sure to come back each week to see where I visit next!
